- Afghanistan Flying Scarves
These scarfs are hand sewn by Afghan women from Parwan Province. Nearly 400 women come together from Chaharikar and Bagram districts in order to create these pieces of art in a war torn country.Many are widowed by war or mutilated by IEDs and land mines. Most have young children to provide for but cant due to very limited employment opportunities for women. Despite all they have endured, these women are optimistic about the future and want to see their country grow into a proud and prosperous nation for their children's sakes.
Each scarf represents nearly a week of work and provides these women with sustainable income with which they can provide for their families. The material for these scarves is a light weight wool and pashmina. Due to the lack of textile infrastructure in Parwan Province, scarves are imported from either Pakistan or India. Once brought into country, the Afghan women hand sew every bead onto the material with artisan designs.
